Melksham Town Substation

Project Description

Melksham Town is subject to flooding at regular intervals and to varying levels, but under worst case conditions, all the 33kV outdoor switchgear, the two transformers and the 11kV switch room & relay rooms would be flooded to various levels.

The objective of this scheme was to systematically remove all the 33kV Outdoor switchgear, busbars, Cable Sealing Ends, and all support structures and to replace with equivalent indoor switchgear and all ancillary equipment housed in a new purpose-built elevated switch room. The space created within the outdoor compound then allowed for two new fully bunded transformer bays with elevated bases.

The scheme was be phased, with the first phase allowing the construction of the new building and its equipping with 33kV switchgear, transformer voltage control panels, protection batteries, and a new telemetry outstation. As the phases progressed, two new 20/40MVA Transformers were installed on the new plinths.

Incoming and outgoing 33kV Circuits were diverted through the new 33kV switchboard. New 33kV Cable Oil Reservoirs were located on new high-level plinths. New 33kV transformer feeders and 11kV singles were installed.
